The people who know where I ride my BMW always ask me why I have cast wheels on the R 1200 GS. After explaining that when this bike came out, I did not have a choice... my answer typically goes something like this: “I have not seen anything these wheels cannot handle as well as the spokes.” This is an example of what I mean. Had this type of impact happened with a spoke wheel, the result would have been much the same --> a bent bead.
In my case, I rode the bike another 500 miles before somebody else pointed it out to me. The tire never lost air and frankly, I do not know where it exactly happened. The best deduction is that it occurred heading up from the East to Rollins Pass the weekend before.
I answered a call to help Woody on another fetish of his. I told him that I was not worried about my wheel since it had held up for thousands of miles (and even a tire change). He told me that he better take a look at it. When his eyes lit up at the site of my wheel, I knew it needed to be fixed.
Thank You Woody’s Wheel Works!
